Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
ALN provision at Tonysguboriau Primary School
At Tonysguboriau Primary School, we believe that children should be valued for their individual talents. Sometimes they might need a little bit of extra support in areas like literacy, numeracy and emotional wellbeing.
As a school, we ensure the needs of all children are met through high quality teaching and universal provision. Our universal school provision will help meet the needs of most of our children. All of our children can access the following types of support as part of our universal provision, which is designed to support our children when they need some extra help, catch up or maintain the progress they have been making with their learning.
Tonysguboriau universal provision includes:
- whole class teaching
- effective differentiation
- collaborative group work
- individual and small group intervention
- appropriate and reasonable adjustments made to the school day, which enable access to the school environment, curriculum and facilities.
If a child receiving universal provision does not make expected progress, further investigation and assessments will be carried out to help us identify if a child has an additional learning need (ALN).
Definition of ALN:
A child has additional learning needs if he/she has a learning difficulty that calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. Special educational provision means: Educational provision, which is additional to, or otherwise different from, the educational provision made generally available for children of their age in schools maintained by the LEA, other than special schools, in the area.
A child has a learning difficulty if he or she:
a) Has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age;
b) Has a disability which either prevents or hinders the child from making use of educational facilities of a kind provided for children of the same age in schools within the area of the local education authority;
c) Are under compulsory school age and fall within the definition at (a) or (b) above or would do so if special educational provision was not made for them.
At Tonysguboriau Primary School, we shall:
Work with the Local Education Authority and parents to ensure a child’s Additional Learning needs are identified quickly.
Ensure the wishes of the child are taken into account when providing ALN provision.
Review the child’s progress regularly and assess the impact of any intervention that they are receiving.
Work closely with parents and all agencies involved with the child.
Ensure that all children reach their full potential.
