Healthy Relationships and Well-being
At our school, we believe that learning about relationships and emotional well-being is just as important as learning to read and write. Through our whole-school approach, we equip children with the understanding and skills they need to build positive relationships, manage emotions, and look after their mental health.
Children take part in engaging, age-appropriate lessons as part of our Well-being Wednesday sessions, alongside visits from trusted organisations such as Spectrum, Hafan Cymru, and our local PCSO. These sessions help pupils explore real-life scenarios and strengthen their understanding of what it means to be healthy, safe, and respectful in the relationships they form.
This learning falls under the Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) curriculum. Children begin by learning how to recognise their own thoughts and feelings and how to express them appropriately. As they progress through the school, they explore the nature of friendships and families, the difference between healthy and unhealthy behaviours, and the importance of mutual respect. They also learn about their rights, especially the right to feel safe, have a voice, and be free from harm.
Pupils are taught how to stay safe online, how to recognise peer pressure and bullying, and what to do if they need help. As they grow older, this includes sensitive but essential topics such as puberty, periods, conception, pregnancy, and birth, all taught with care, clarity, and respect.
We also place a strong emphasis on mental health and emotional wellbeing. Our aim is to support every child in recognising emotions, building resilience, and developing strategies to stay mentally healthy. To support this, we offer a range of helpful resources for families, including:
Thrive: Strategies to support children’s emotional development
Young Minds: Support for young people’s mental health
Place2Be: Mental health services and resources for schools and families
Mentally Healthy Schools: Practical tools and guidance for promoting wellbeing
We are proud to be a school that nurtures not just academic success but happy, healthy, confident children, ready to build positive relationships for life.
