Relationships and sexuality Education
Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) at Our School
At our school, Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) is a key part of the Health and Wellbeing Area of Learning and Experience. It supports children to develop the knowledge, skills, and values they need to build healthy, safe, and respectful relationships—underpinned by an understanding of their rights and the rights of others.
Our RSE provision is age-appropriate, inclusive, and progressive, following the Welsh curriculum’s guidance through clearly defined progression steps.
Progression Step 1 (Nursery & Reception)
Children begin to recognise and celebrate what makes them unique. They learn the correct names for body parts (including private body parts), explore personal boundaries, and identify trusted adults who help keep them safe. Through play, stories, and daily routines, they develop an awareness of fairness, kindness, and their right to feel safe and respected.
Progression Step 2 (Years 1 to 3)
Pupils build on earlier learning to understand different types of relationships, including families and friendships. They develop empathy, explore how to manage emotions, and learn respectful ways to express their needs and feelings. Children revisit the correct anatomical terms for their bodies and begin to learn about the physical and emotional changes that occur as they grow. Throughout this step, they are supported to understand that they have rights and responsibilities, including the right to be listened to, to feel safe, and to be treated with dignity.
Progression Step 3 (Years 4 to 6)
Children deepen their understanding of relationships, including recognising safe and unsafe behaviours both in person and online. They learn about puberty, including menstruation, body changes, emotional well-being, and hygiene. Lessons explore consent, personal boundaries, respectful relationships, and seeking help. Children also examine how rights apply in everyday life, such as the right to education, the right to express their views, and the right to information, while considering how respecting the rights of others supports a kind and inclusive community.
RSE at our school is taught with care, sensitivity, and inclusivity. It creates a safe and supportive environment that empowers children to understand themselves, respect others, and grow into confident, informed, and compassionate individuals.
