Autumn Term - Our Wonderful World
In this topic, your child will learn about the world around them and how we can describe different places.
They will find out what the words geography, physical feature (things that are natural, like rivers or hills) and human feature (things people have made, like buildings or roads) mean.
The children will explore different types of maps, including picture maps, globes, online maps and world maps. They will practise using words about position (such as next to and behind) and direction (such as forwards and backwards). They will also begin to learn the four compass points: north, south, east and west.
Your child will learn the names and locations of the world’s continents and oceans. They will also hear about the equator, Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere, and find out where some hot and cold places are.
Closer to home, they will use maps to find out the names, capital cities and locations of the four countries of the United Kingdom. They will also discover what makes a village, a town and a city different.
The children will look at aerial photographs to spot familiar areas from above, and will carry out simple fieldwork to explore the natural (physical) and man-made (human) features in our local area.
