PERMA
What is PERMA and How Does It Support Your Child?
At our school, we use the PERMA model to help children understand what well- being looks and feels like. Developed by psychologist Dr Martin Seligman, PERMA outlines five key areas that support positive mental health and happiness:
P – Positive Emotions: Helping children recognise and enjoy feelings such as joy, gratitude, and pride.
E – Engagement: Encouraging children to find activities they love and focus on, building their confidence and concentration.
R – Relationships: Supporting children in developing strong, kind, and respectful friendships and connections.
M – Meaning: Helping children understand that they are part of something bigger, and that their actions matter.
A – Accomplishment: Encouraging children to set goals, work hard, and feel proud of their efforts and progress.
By using PERMA across school life—from classroom activities to well-being sessions—we support children in building resilience, feeling more connected, and developing the emotional tools they need to thrive. It's one of the many ways we help children feel happy, safe, and ready to learn.
