Week 3 & 4
What a fast paced and fun first four weeks we have had in Year 5. The children have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and curiosity, and it has been a joy to watch them grow as learners and teammates.
🌱 We began by clearing our garden space, ready to plant our allotment. As part of our sustainability focus, pupils planted a range of items including a crisp packet, toy car and various food scraps to investigate how compostable they are. This sparked brilliant questions and thoughtful predictions.
🚰 We also welcomed Dŵr Cymru for a hands on engineering challenge. Pupils worked in teams to lay pipes around a model town, solving problems to keep water flowing. They calculated costs and added £100 every time a leak occurred, there was plenty of laughter and learning along the way.
📝 We have just completed our biographies on Jane Goodall, and they are absolutely fantastic. The children worked incredibly hard to apply key writing skills and uplevel their work. Their final pieces blew me away.
In maths, we have been exploring numbers into the thousands and ten thousands, ordering and comparing, and applying our knowledge to real world problems. Pupils used their addition skills to calculate train journeys across the UK, some impressive reasoning and resilience on show.
In topic, we have been learning about food miles and sustainability. Pupils researched where their food comes from, calculated travel distances and explored the environmental impact. We discovered that while local food is often best, some imported items can be surprisingly sustainable. We also explored companion planting and how certain plants can help ward off pests or improve flavour. We have now created a database about different vegetables and their soil type and companion plants so that we can use this to help us plan our garden designs.
In RVE, we have started learning about Hindu beliefs and the journey through life.
In RSE, we have been discussing how to manage worries and the importance of talking to someone when we feel anxious or unsure.
It has been a pleasure getting to know your children and learning more about what they enjoy. Their energy, kindness and curiosity have made these first few weeks truly special.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you need anything.
Warm regards,
