Week 5 and 6
Literacy: Diary writing
Over the past fortnight, we have been busy exploring diary writing through the story Welcome to Hinch Farm, using techniques like double-hyphenated colours to evoke mood (e.g. storm grey silence), time phrases, personification, tripling and past participles to add emotional depth, next week we will complete this journey, by creating our hot write to showcase our learning and elevated writing skills.
Maths: Multiplication & Division Mastery
We’ve been building confidence in written methods for multiplication and division We have been practising decomposition, grid, and ladder methods to solve multiplication problems. We have also been Learning how to use the bus stop method for short division. Pupils have shown great resilience and reasoning as they tackled increasingly complex problems.

Topic: plants, plants everywhere!
In topic and science, pupils created plant databases, dissected plants, learnt about photosynthesis, and compared gardens and allotments. We also designed surveys and graphed data about garden use in Talbot Green. Pupils explored global farming practices and compared them to British methods.
Visitors and Experiences
Bryn Pica Recycling Visit
Pupils took part in hands-on recycling activities, learning about sustainability, waste sorting, and how materials are reused. It was a brilliant way to link science and citizenship.
HMRC Visit: Understanding Taxes
A team from HMRC visited to teach us about how taxes work. Pupils asked thoughtful questions, one even stumped the experts by asking:
“If we buy a book from a charity shop, do we pay tax again even though it was taxed before?”
We discovered that even children pay tax when buying items like chocolate or pens! Pupils then role-played as government ministers, deciding how to allocate public spending across healthcare, education, museums, armed forces, police, and countryside protection.
Most pupils prioritised healthcare and education, while others championed security and nature. It was a powerful exercise in empathy, decision-making and citizenship.
